Unauthorized Free Range Chicken Dilema

Okay so everyone knows by now this is the Taylor's first experience owning their own backyard chickens! Well another chicken crisis occurred today, but thankfully it did NOT end in a chicken casualty this time. The events that unfolded could have certainly ended in all 4 remaining chickens being something else's afternoon snack for sure!

Anyway, so today we went out to check on the chickens and enjoy the nostalgia of having them out there clucking and scratching around. We did our daily afternoon inspection although I had already fed them fresh and changed their water fresh this morning. I knew they had what they needed, but it's like I said "routine"!

After inspection, we decided to take a sit down under the tree and wait for our dump truck load of compost. As you can see Savannah and I were startled by a chicken breakout:

As my daughter playing the role of chicken watchdog today yells, "momma the chickens are running away" we both jump up and start to wrangle the chickens. Although this was quite the job! I thought if anything this will be easy with Savannah, 'cause what kid doesn't want to chase a chicken? Well, she wanted to chase the chickens, but then would "girl out" on me when they'd turn and run back toward her! As you can imagine this created a "round and round" with no quick resolve! I've said it many times...chickens play follow the leader in everything. If one is hungry, then they all are hungry. If one chicken is thirsty they all race to the watering can. If one is ready to roost then they all race to roost. Well when one chicken found it's way through the fence, then two more immediately followed and I caught the fourth chicken on her way out! So luckily the other three hung out trying to coach her toward her "break out" aspirations!

So I grab a rubber made bucket and throw some feed in it and lay it at the corner of the back, then I tell Savannah go chase the chickens to momma.

Savi: She seems to understand the plan, but then just stands there and giggles and says but it will get me!
Me: Seriously? Just chase the chickens to momma Savannah.
Savi: attempts to chase the chicken around the little dog kennel fencing then when the chicken sees me turns around and starts running back to Savi. She "girls out " on me and runs away from the chicken then we have chicken chasing girl across back yard episode  in progress!
Me: Savannah turn around and play tag with the chicken!
Savi: I go get you chickens
Me: there you go, tag her tag her

-She successfully gets the first chicken into the rubber made bucket in which I run around and tilt toward the open door of kennel and she flies out in aggravation that she was caught!

Me: now Savannah here's the plan, we're going to do the same thing
Savi: we gonna play ring around the rosies?
Me: NO NO NO Savannah we do NOT want to play ring around the rosies with the chickens, we're trying to save them and put them back in their safe fence,
Savi: Oh NO what we gonna do momma?
Me: Savannah look at mommy, just play tag and chase the chickens to momma
Savi: ha ha ha the chickens don't like you momma they runnin
Me: can we just stick to the plan?

-She successfully runs 2/3 to me and I grab her by the tale feather gently and she's just a squawking to the last chicken "SAVE YOURSELF" it's too late for us! At this point I could NOT help but laugh out loud and wonder what the neighbor's are thinking!

Me: Savannah, can you do it one more time?
Savi: no I'm tired, I don't want to!
Me: Savannah be a BIG GIRL and run that chicken to momma, well I just ended up having to outrun the chicken and threw the gate open and she ran/flew right into the fence herself to the rest of the girls.

And just about that time our delivery of compost arrived! So I've got a heavy cinder block blocking the escape route of the fence until the hubs gets home to help me since I can see Savannah is not dependable in these crisis situations yet!

All in a days work on our "fantasy farm" I guess?
